El Vaja Definitivo By Juan Ramon Jimenez

El Vaja Definitivo
By Juan Ramon Jimenez

(The Definitive Journey
Translation by Lila Robertson, 2002)

...Y yo me ire.

..and I will be gone. And the birds will still be singing,
and here will stay my field, with it’s tree so green
and it’s white well.

Every evening, the sky will be blue and peaceful,
and the bells will play, like they play this evening,
together in the church tower.

Those, the ones who loved me, will die,
and the village will become new with each year,
and in that corner of my flowered and whitewashed field
my spirit will wander longingly...

And I will be gone, and I’ll be alone, with no home,
without any tree so green, without any a white well…
without a blue and peaceful sky…
And the birds will still be singing.

Eternity

Gone are all the restless cares
That kept me from the sea
Swept with out a trace into
The endless starlit dream.

And all of my illusions
Fall, like snowflakes in a heap,
Without a sound, collapsing in
A cascade of debris.

Until there's nothing left except
The very heart of me.

And everywhere I look around,
As far as eye can see,
Roaring darkness beckons to
Engulf me in it's stream.

As rushing waves, crash hard,
Against the seawall, through the night,
' Till sunrise burns the morning sky,
Devouring the night.

And deep within this empty-scape
A seagull's piercing cry,
Winging towards eternity,
If only I could fly.

Oh my! Oh me!

Oh my oh me,
I need to pee,
While curled up here,
So sleepily.

Deep down inside
My cozy bed,
The covers pulled
Over my head.

It's so unfair!
I clutch my hair,
It's just ...it's very
Cold out there!

1000 miles
From here to there.
I have to pee,
(I don't care where.)

Did someone nosy,
Move the John,
While I lay dozing,
Before dawn?

It used to be
Across the room,
But now it's moved
Up near the moon.

The longer that I try to stay
Curled up down here in this warm place
The farther it seems far away.

So, quickly now,
Be brave! Be strong!
Suck in my gut!
It shan't be long!

(Oh! That was not
Too smart of me
I think that I
Just popped something....)

I turn to God,
For strength, and hope,
He whispers gently
"Don't think of boats!"

Temperance, prudence,
Time heals all"
I curl into
A tighter ball.

Perhaps if I
Go back to sleep,
I'll wake up from
This anguished  dream.

A dream filled full
Of hopeful wishing,
That I could be
Gently pishing.

But, alas,
Cruel fate, is mine,
The spirit wills
(T'would be divine.)

As thoughts encircle,
Plans of tryin'
Here in bed,
I stay, denyin'..."

I can do this!
Yes, of course;
Now.... concentrate
And Use the Force....

Relinquish need
Relax and breath,
(Just not too much,
and not too deep!)

It's all bout focus
Hocus pocus
When mind's  over matter,
There IS no more bladder

And....
Now my belly
Start to ache,
The pee is creeping
To my face.

If I don't get me out of bed,
It's gonna creep untill  my head,
And when I go, it shall be said-
"She used her eyes to pee, instead."

Oh my oh mee,
I need to pee,
While curled up here,
So sleepily.

I want to go,
I want to stay,
Oh! What a way
To start my day.

My heart is here
My heart is there,
Too bad I can't be
Everywhere.

Here goes,
I think I better run,
So long, dear friend,
It's been some fun!

I dash there fast!
To find another,
Got there, first.
Ain't life a bummer?

Rainbow Pops

Rainbow Pops

If I were there I'd make you tea
With honey and some crumbly  cake,
Then tell you tales of  pretty fishies
Swimming in a mountain lake.

And put on great big sunglasses,
With Lady Gaga shoes, and then
I'd dance a fancy cha-cha,
Like a dancing, prancing, barnyard Hen...

( Until  I laugh so hard that I
Just can't dance anymore-
Cuz if I do then there's a chance,
I could  pee on the floor.)

If I were there I'd throw away
Those silly purple packs of ice,
And give you lots of rainbow pops
With red and orange wavy stripes.

To put on where it hurts the most,
Until it feels all cold and nice,
(And one to lick, until the stick,
After your chicken soup, with rice.)

I hope you get well, super quick,
Cuz it's no fun when you are sick!
Feel good! Feel good! Feel good real soon!
Then call me on the telephoon-

'Cause since your there and I am not,
(And you hate sympathy, a lot!)
I'll simply say, right on the spot:
Please know, that I forgot-you-not.

-Cause you're the center of the dot-
It's true, my dear, so doubt it not,
Your all the notes inside my song,
Get well! Get well! Don't take so long!

Cause you're the center of the dot,
That's why I can forget you not! ,
You give the  rhythm to my tune,
So please, my friend, get well real soon!

The Seashell

I found a seashell on the shore,
All swirly, pink and white,
As I went walking by the sea,
One starry, summer's night

Recalling all my journeys,
And the far lands that I've seen,
The hopes that bore me through the lonesome
Ocean of my dreams.

And all the ways that knowing you,
Have made me who I am;
Blessed to see God's wonders
In the sea, and in the sand.

You taught me to take notice,
And attend to small details,
Like the tiny lines and grooves that mark
This shell, that held a snail.

And how to listen for the song,
Inside what people  share,
To hear the rush of silent tears,
Behind their walls of fear.

While faithfully remembering,
That elegance, and grace,
Are proven when we're called to sail,
Life harsh, uncharted waves.

And now, my dear, that you have flown,
And I'm left on the shore,
I'll seek your spirit, in the stars,
And the small things you adored;

The sky ablaze, in red and gold,
Where heavens kiss the land,
A seashell, swirled with pink and white,
That I found you, in the sand.

Just Imagine!

Oh! How absolutely strange
This life shall someday be,
When days and nights, no longer are
Consumed with unslept sleep.

Imagine falling into bed
Without encyclopedia head.

And  zillion of stickies
All pink, green and blue
Crammed full with reminders
Of things I must do.

And piles of  articles,
Waiting review.

For PowerPoint slide shows
To write and present,
On the history of OTA's
Next  president.

Or three major tests,
To show all that I know
'Bout  muscles and motions
That wiggle your toe.

And how to get babies,
To roll, creep and crawl
And using otolithic organs
To prevent a fall!

Say, have you ever woken up
Wholly shaken, in a sweat,
Relieved that it was just a dream
And trying to forget,

That moment,  in your deep, dark dream;
It's finals, now?! You want to scream,
As Dr. Doom-stein hands you one
That's printed  in Chinese?!

Or dreaming that as you arrive,
All breathless, Monday morn',
Your caught off guard to find out
That today it is your turn-

To lecture about topics
That you haven't ever learned,
Like taping, splinting, casting, fixing,
Dyskinetic worms!

And how to make cool sock aids
For some big, tall astronauts,
Who fly 'up to the moon, and then
Can't  reach their space-suit socks!)

Just imagining such a night,
When I lay down to sleep,
My dream all  pink and peachy cream
Like cozy, cuddly sheep....

I think I'll sleep a zillion years
And wake up in the spring
To smell the roses all abloom
And hear the Robin sing:

"Wake up! Wake up now, sleepy head!
It's time to have some fun.
Your patients wait, now don't be late,
Your work has just begun!

Zug Yonim

Cherry Blossom

Cherry Blossom

When I die,
Please,  bury  me,
Underneath a cherry  tree,
And I shall  blossom with each spring-
And scatter my loveliness, free.

When  time, it   comes,
Weep  not, dear one,
But know that I am free-
To part the skies, with wings spread wide,
And to cross the vast blue seas.

And in the springtime, every year,
When white gives way to green,
You'll  sit beneath my outstretched arms
As  I shower you with pink.

Then close your eyes and run your hands,
All through   the petal covered deep,
And in my  soft, pink  fragerant bed,
You'll lay   your   head to sleep.

And  in your  dreams, you'll  hear my laughter,
Dancing   on the   the hills,
Singing  sweet as silver bells,
"My love, I love you still!"

Please,  keep me warmly in   your heart,
All through  the ice and  rain;
For  when the frozen earth relents,
Each spring,  I'll bloom again.

When I die, love,
Bury me
Underneath a  cherry  tree,
That I may  blossom  with each spring-
And scatter my loveliness, free.

Wings

Wings

Dear God, though I may  never more
Be held in love's embrace,
Please, let me give, without reserve,
Let kindness light my face.

And though I never more may drink,
From  love's sweet, gentle cup,
Please grace my lips , with words that fit,
Like two soft  turtle doves.

And if these broken wings  shan't  ever
Lift me to the sky,
I'll rend the very  heavens,  with
One broken  hearted  cry.

And if this broken heart of mine
Shall ever more be broke,
I"ll give each broken  piece away,
To make another whole.

And God, If in your wisdom,
You've  decreed I die alone,
Please bury me high on a cliff,
To see the shores  of home.

But  if in your great mercy, L-rd,
You've granted me  more time,
I vow  to dance, to laugh, and love ,
To spread my wings and fly.

Looking Glass Eyes

Looking glass eyes

What do you see
When you look into these eyes-
A woman who is brave and strong
Compassionate and wise?

A woman who has laughed, and cried,
And struggled,  to bring  life?
Protecting everything she loves-
No matter what the price?

Or do you see your fears reflected
in these pools of green;
The hopes and dreams that slip away,
The losses you still  grieve?

What do you see when you look into
A mirror to your soul?
A broken window on the past,
Or the half, that makes you whole?

Can you find, by searching,
For yourself  on distant shores?
And yet, you  wander, more and more…
Forsaking all  you once stood for…

Stop searching, friend, and you will  find
Your  wholeness, laughter, joy, and light
And all that makes you  kind and wise....
Reflected in ..these two green eyes.

The Tale of Sir Edward The Great

Sir Edward the Great

Gather Round ye honored  guests,
For you I shall regale
With recounting,
Of  the Great  Sir Edward's tale.

Sir Edward ruled the British Isle,
His  might renown  over many a mile.

His valiant conquests
Were sung in  far  halls,
Brave nobles  revered him...
(since they  were quite small.)

And now for the recounting
 Of Great Sir Edward's tale,
And all the  hapless  victims which
He wantonly  impaled.

Though  merciless and slowly
He did  stab  them through the  heart,
Not  a victim of Sir Edward's
Ever wished him to depart!

( For, While ancient lore
 Boasts tales of gore;
Blood curdling screams of doom-

Sir Edwards victims always  begged " come back to me so soon! " )

Perhaps it was his big strong  heart
Perhaps some sorcerers trick-
But if you ask Sir Edward's foes,
They'll  blame  his....magical stick.

Now if ye list'ners wish,
To measure Sir Edward's worth
Measure him not in  length or height
But in nobility, strength and girth.

Ye maidens all a-blushed;
With your  cheeks pale as the moon,
Hide not , nor cast your eyes aside-
Nor cry, nor faint nor swoon.

'Tis fact; ye dream  of a noble death
At the hands of a mighty Lord,

Like Edward the  Great,
For whom ye await
To be slain with his great mighty ...sword.

Wanting 2

Wanting

Have you ever loved someone,
Who loves you back, and more?
Have you e'r been treasured by
The one  whom you adore?

Have you ever wondered where
You're true love hides, and why?
Though her  scent still lingers,
As the sound of her soft sigh....

Perhaps your waiting for the one
Who sets your soul  aflame,
With unrequited passion,
With a strange, exotic name.

Or maybe you're just looking for
That small, round, home-grown type-
Who sews,  and cleans and makes the beds,
And grows organic rice?

Perhaps your searching for your love,
Upon some distant shore,
(But, even if  you  find her,  love,
You'll   keep on searching,  more....)

'Cause when it's day you long for night,
At night you crave the sun,
How can you find  what's yours, my friend,
When searching's  what you want?

No matter what you're looking for,
No matter what's  the game,
The characters all come and go,
But  some things never change:

It seems you want somebody
Who don't want  you, quite the same,
And  when you sense her  disregard
Your instincts start to "clang",

Your heart begins to flutter,
Thinking  " this might  be The ONE!"
'Cause  something in your little  heart
Just needs to run, and run....

'Cause when it's day you long for night,
At night you wait for dawn,
How can you own  what's yours, my friend,
When seeking's what  you want?

No matter what you're looking for,
No matter what's the game,
The characters all come and go,
But, some things never change.

And so you go around the track,
Finding all the specks of black
In anyone who  wants   you, and
Who wants to love  you back.

And when the  search is on, again,
Your know the  lines, your on your game,
( While in your heart  your kind of mad,
Relieved,  frustrated, somewhat sad.)

But  , you're  worth so much more,  yes, you...
Your kind, and wise and funny, too!
And when you  find someone like you,
Just hold her tight, and love her true!

'Cause when it's day you long for night,
At night you crave the day,
How can have what's yours, my friend
When  wanting's  what you crave?

No matter what you're looking for,
No matter what's  the game,
The characters all come and go,
But, some things just don't  change...

Starlight

Starlight

Silently they  sail above
The misty  midnight  moon,

Exhaling starlight,
Woven into
Ancient , rhythmic  tunes

As  fragments of the universe
About   them,  coalesce,
Transposing   night in  chords  of light,
Sung soft, as angels' breath.

...Since We Danced In Sprinklers

Wherever has  your dear heart gone
How  long's it been, my friend,
Since we danced in  sprinklers
Or built castles in the sand?

Can you still remember
When next birthday took too long!
The feel the grass   between our toes,
Big raindrops on your tongue?

Remember how we  lay awake,
To watch the moon, so far,
And  heard the nighttime angel
Whisper secrets, to the stars?

Or the pleasure of surrender
To oceans cold  embrace,
Becoming one with sand and sun,
And sky, with each new  waves?

When spring time,  friends, and lazy days
Were life's exquisite pleasures,
When "love" was  God's  most sacred  word,
And I, your  hidden treasure?

We stayed  up late  to watch the sun
Kiss yesterday goodnight,
 Exploding in a symphony of
Crimson, gold and white .

Remember how your heart leaped
Just to hear me call  your name?
And when my hand,  laid soft in yours,
Still  took your breath away?

Wherever has  your  dear heart gone
How long's it been, my friend,
Since we danced in  sprinklers
Or caught sun rays in our hand?

Where ever has your sprit flown,
The one that I adored ?
In dreams, I search, and don't give up,
Until it's found, once more.

Can you still remember
When "next birthday" took too long?
The feel of  grass between our  toes,
Cool raindrops on our tongue?

Remember when we lay awake,
To see the moon stand guard,
And hear the constellations
Whisper secrets to the stars ?

Or the coolness of  surrender
Into oceans deep embrace,
Becoming one, with sand and sun,
Diving under waves?

When spring, and friends, and  ice cream cones
Were life's exquisite pleasure-
And "love" was  God's  most sacred word,

'Till I have you once more.

Untill We Melt

Until we melt....

The rain pours down
In sheets of glass,
That blend into a
A blinking mass

Of  multicolored
Orbs of light
Cascading down
This rain-drenched night

All pooling in a puddle of
desires, dreams,  and hopeless love.

And every drop that hits the street,
intensifies the rhythmic beat,
Of hearts that throb with longing for
A chance to see the stars once more.

And each drop beating on my roof,
Awakens ancient, mournful tune,
Of spirits howling to the moon,
In anguished need  that comes too soon.

And my wet heart is all soaked through,
With missing and resisting you.

I wish that you were here to see
This brilliant, glowing night with me,
And feel the rhythm of the night
Pulsing with this sparkling light.

If you were here  I'd hold you tight
Until we melt and turn to white.
